Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer nearly had a truly authentic Las Vegas weekend while filming Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
In episode five of the Apple TV series, Margo (Fanning) and her mom, Shyanne (Pfeiffer), go to Las Vegas for a bachelorette trip ahead of her wedding to Kenny (Greg Kinnear). At one point during the trip, they rent a limo and cruise down the infamous Las Vegas Strip while standing in the open air, popping out of the sunroof of the limo.
The scene made the final cut of the episode, but Fanning revealed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, June 11, that the moment nearly got her and Pfeiffer arrested.
She said that it was a “bucket list thing” to be standing in the sunroof, particularly while driving down such a famous stretch, but the experience was quickly dimmed by the police escort behind them.
“Behind us, we hear, ‘Ladies! Get down! Get down!’ And, like, sirens are going, and we’re just staying in the scene. We’re trying to be professional, you know?” Fanning, 28, told host Jimmy Fallon. “We’re like, ‘This is surely not for us. Like, what’s this a part of?’ And we had a police escort because they knew we were filming, so I was like, ‘This is fine.’ “

It turned out that they were not so fine. The police escort behind them started yelling, “Get down! Get down! We will arrest you! We will arrest you!”
Fanning brought a behind-the-scenes clip with her to The Tonight Show to demonstrate how she and Pfeiffer, 68, responded to the panic. “We start to just go down, and then our little penis [headbands] are like right out the sunroof, and we’re crouching down,” she said.
“They pulled us over because they said, you’re not allowed to do this,” she continued. “You can’t put your head out a sunroof anymore. [It’s a] thing of the past.”
“But we did get clearance,” Fanning reiterated. “That police officer just, he wasn’t aware that it was okay. But yeah, we almost got arrested.”
Fanning told PEOPLE that Pfeiffer is “family to me” after filming Margo’s Got Money Troubles, an adaptation of Rufi Thorpe’s bestselling novel.
“We got really close, especially playing these two characters on this set,” Fanning said. “And Shyanne and Margo’s relationship is one that’s complicated and juicy, and I’m just very honored that it was Michelle, to get to do it with her.”

Pfeiffer told PEOPLE that she had been “blown away” by Fanning’s performance in The Great and applauded her costar for being such a “strong producer” on Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
“[She’s] just the consummate professional and she’s able to just wholeheartedly slip into character, do this emotional scene, do three takes, come out of it and handle issues as a producer,” Pfeiffer said.
“And then, sidebar, you’re off. She’s chewing bubblegum, and we’re laughing — [she’s] the easiest person on the planet to make laugh,” Pfeiffer continued. “We laugh a lot and she’s just very, very good-hearted and joyous.”
