It has now been six years since Fiona Apple released her album Fetch The Bolt Cutters. For anyone else, that would be a long time. But if you’re a fan of Fiona Apple, you’ve presumably made peace with the fact that she goes many, many years in between albums. We shouldn’t expect a new record from Apple anytime soon, either. In a video message last week, Apple said that she’s struggling to write about “this fucking endless barrage of horrors” that she sees in the world around her, though she’s “going to keep trying.” But when things line up just right, Fiona Apple might still write and record a new song.
Last year, for instance, Fiona Apple released a few things. She covered Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold” for a tribute album. She performed (but did not write) “Letter From An Unknown Girlfriend,” from the Waterboys’ album Life, Death And Dennis Hopper. She released “Pretrial (Let Her Go Home),” a benefit single inspired by her experiences as a volunteer court-watcher. This year, Apple co-wrote her friend Cara Delevingne’s electro-pop song “Need It.” She also wrote and recorded “Horns Of The Bull,” a new song that serves as the theme song for the Apple TV+ miniseries Lucky, which debuts today.
Lucky is an adaptation of the Marissa Stapley novel, and it stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a brilliant international con-woman on the run from the FBI and Annette Bening’s crime boss. The heavyweight cast also includes Timothy Olyphant, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Clifton Collins Jr. It looks pretty fun!
Fiona Apple has a familial connection to Lucky. She co-produced “Horns Of The Bull” with her drummer Amy Aileen Wood, and Wood’s wife Cassie Pappas is one of the series’ two showrunners. Apple hasn’t properly released “Horns Of The Bull,” but the first two Lucky episodes are streaming now, which means that the song and the title sequence are out there. To me, it’s striking that “Horns Of The Bull” sounds less like a TV show theme and more like a Fiona Apple song, with all the intense writing, delivery, and tempo changes that she brings to the table. (It’s only a minute and 40 seconds, though, so maybe it’s half of a Fiona Apple song.) Check out the title sequence below.
Lucky is streaming now on Apple TV+.
