Frankie Muniz‘s 5-year-old son Mauz did not enjoy feeling like he was in the middle of Malcolm’s tumultuous family while watching his dad act in Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.
Muniz, 40, recently spoke with USA Today about having his wife Paige Muniz and son Mauz on set while filming a pivotal scene in the Hulu revival of Malcolm in the Middle.
“There’s a scene where I’m talking about Malcolm’s relationship with his family, and I talked about how crazy my family is and how I’ve got to stay away from them,” Muniz told the outlet in an interview published on Tuesday, April 14, adding of his son: “Paige had to take him off set because he was like, ‘Why doesn’t Daddy like us?'”
In one scene of the new series, Malcolm (Muniz) has to defend himself for hiding his teenage daughter from his parents and siblings.
“You made me do this!” Muniz’s character says in the scene. “This family’s nonstop antisocial behavior and mindless belligerence and myopic priorities are toxic to me. Every single bad thing that happened to my life is your fault!”
“[Mauz] didn’t understand that I was not talking about [him and Paige] because he doesn’t know me as an actor,” Muniz told USA Today.

Muniz said his son mostly recognizes him as a race car driver. The actor has been driving competitively since 2007 and began driving in NASCAR in 2024.

“He doesn’t understand the concept of pretending stuff for TV yet,” Muniz told the outlet. “He doesn’t watch a lot of shows. [Mauz] hasn’t seen me as an actor, necessarily. He only knows me as a race car driver or being interviewed talking about me.”
Muniz previously told PEOPLE exclusively that he hopes the revival makes Mauz “proud.”
“I know it kind of sounds cliche to say, but what you think is important in life, the things that you really focus on, to me, until you have a kid … and so many people say that: You have no idea,” Muniz explained at the revival’s New York City premiere on April 7. “Even being on set and my son being there, I want to make him proud. I’m doing it for a show, I’m doing it for the producers, I’m doing it for the other actors — but I’m doing it for him.”
All episodes of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair are streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
