Paul Dano wasn’t Quentin Tarantino’s only victim on The Bret Easton Podcast last week. The director also said he “doesn’t care for” actor Matthew Lillard. Lillard’s response? He doesn’t care for Tarantino either. But also, has Tarantino not seen the live action Scooby Doo movie? Because there’s just no way you could watch that film and feel anything but overwhelming affection for Lillard’s Shaggy. [Editor’s note: But also, Scream? Summer Catch? She’s All That?!?!?!!]
While speaking at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, over the weekend, Lillard addressed Tarantino’s comments, saying, “Quentin Tarantino this week said that he doesn’t like me as an actor. Eh, whatever. Who gives a shit?” he told the very supportive audience. “Listen, the point is that it hurts your feelings,” he continued. “It fuckin’ sucks. And you wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise. You wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor in Hollywood.” (I think many people would be far more likely to say it about Cruise, but that’s beside the point.)
Lillard’s overall point was this: “I’m very popular in this room. I’m not very popular in Hollywood. Two totally different microcosms, right? And so, you know, it’s humbling, and it hurts.” So basically, Tarantino went on a podcast and hurt Lillard’s feelings out of nowhere and for no good reason. Folks, we ride at dawn.
The comments about Lillard were part of Tarantino’s larger podcast tirade, where he came for everything from The Hunger Games franchise (a “total ripoff” of the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale) and Dano, whom he called a “big, giant flaw” in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood and “the weakest fucking actor in SAG.” For the Who Weekly? fans among us, this is an acute case of a condition we call “podcast mouth.”
Tarantino’s comments have led to a slew of bad press, as both Hunger Games and Dano fans rose up to defend their faves. Following Tarantino’s criticism, a bunch of A-listers also defended the Little Miss Sunshine star, including, Reese Witherspoon (“Incredibly gifted, versatile” and “a gentleman”), Ben Stiller (“Fucking brilliant”), Simu Liu (“An incredible actor”), Alec Baldwin (“If you don’t love Paul Dano, shh.”) Josh Gad (“One of the best actors of our time. Full stop.), and, most notably, his There Will Be Blood co-star Daniel Day-Lewis, who called Dano “One of the best actors of his generation.”
So we now must call upon Hollywood to rise and defend Matthew Lillard with the same vigor. Also, we must ask, is Quentin OK? I mean, the answer obviously is and always will be no, but damn. Why is he being so mean?
And for the record, Hunger Games and Battle Royale are very different.
