ComingSoon Senior Editor Brandon Schreur spoke to Gen V Season 2 stars Maddie Phillips, Asa Germann, and Lizze Broadway about The Boys spin-off show. The three of them discussed how Cate has changed since Season 1, the future of Emma and Sam’s relationship, and more.

“In the second season of Gen V, the acclaimed spinoff series set in the Emmy Award-winning world of The Boys, school is back in session,” the official synopsis reads. “As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander’s iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it.”

Gen V Season 2 premieres on September 17, 2025, on Amazon Prime Video.

Brandon Schreur: Maddie, I want to start with you because I think Cate is becoming one of my favorite Gen V characters after watching this new season. I mean, she’s sometimes aligned with the heroes and sometimes the villains, but it seems so much more complex than good vs. evil. We saw a lot of that in the first season, and a lot of that continues here. What’s your take on when it comes to Cate in Season 2? Do you think she’s changed at all when it comes to aligning with one side? Or do you see her as still struggling to figure out who she is?

Maddie Phillips: That’s a great question. I think there’s a little bit of both going on. I think that throughout this season, there are perspective shifts, transformation, and change. But there’s definitely still a huge difference when it comes to what she thinks is right and what her friends think is right. The cool part about playing this character is that everything that she does and believes is coming from a place of really thinking it’s the right thing and what’s best for people. She’s well-intentioned, even though the results are destructive or wrong. I think what’s cool is that people — the way they look at the world and the beliefs they have are influenced by the context of our lives. And the context of our lives changes, so our opinions change. That’s reflected in the season, and in real life, too. It’s cool to get to play something that’s relatable.

Yeah, totally. I find her struggle so relatable, like you said. Lizze and Asa, I’ve always loved the dynamic between Emma and Sam, and what they have with one another. We ended with Season 1 being complicated — I mean, they were on the complete opposite sides of one another. We have a whole new season and I don’t want to spoil anything, but obviously things change and develop as we go along into these new eight episodes. When Season 1 finished, did you guys think there was going to be a way for these two characters to come back together or reconnect in any way? What surprised you about that dynamic in Season 2?

Asa Germann: We talked about this a lot, actually.

Lizze Broadway: Yeah.

Germann: I always felt very clear that they were going to come back together. I mean, I didn’t know anything at the time. But that always felt very…

Broadway: Right.

Germann: Yeah, right to me, especially given the fact that I think both of them were so —

Broadway: Two misfits

Germann: Yeah. And so early in their developing love. That’s something that I certainly relate to, how complicated it is to grow, change, experience new environments, and maintain a relationship and love for someone. It’s hard.

Broadway: Love is hard, love is tricky, and love is complicated.

Germann: For sure.

Phillips: Love is blind.

Broadway: Love is blind.

Thanks to Maddie Phillips, Asa Germann, and Lizze Broadway for taking the time to discuss Gen V Season 2.
