A pop-punk has updated its most beloved song with a surprising new singer.
Goldfinger teamed up with skate legend Tony Hawk and alternative hip-hop star Bryce Vine for a new version of “Superman,” mixing rap with alternative rock. The song actually now features vocals from Hawk, who included the original version on the soundtrack for his video game “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.”
“‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’ was everything for us early-2000s kids. The soundtrack was like a secret mixtape that shaped a whole generation of musicians—I was one of them,“ Vine said. ”The first time I heard ‘Superman,’ it pulled me straight into ska and punk. Fast-forward years later, I’m in the studio with (Goldfinger frontman) John Feldmann asking if he’d want to produce a cover of his own track. He’s like ‘Hell yeah. We should get Tony Hawk to feature.’ Wild how stuff comes full circle.”
Hawk, 57, is a former professional skateboarder, 10-time X Games gold medalist, and entrepreneur behind the Birdhouse brand and products like “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” video games. Also known as Birdman, Hawk is considered one of the greatest and most influential skaters of all time, appearing in movies and TV shows like “The New Guy,” “Jackass,” “Gleaming the Cube,” “CSI: Miami,” “Thrashin’” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video.
Hawk has previously sung “Superman” live with Goldfinger, but is certainly not known as a singer. The only other music release featuring his vocals is a two-song EP, “In the City,” with Punk Rock Karaoke in 2022.
Vine, 37, is a rapper-singer best known for his mix of alternative hip-hop, rock and R&B on songs like “Drew Barrymore,” “La La Land,” “Sour Patch Kids,” and the Loud Luxury collaboration “I’m Not Okay.” He performed at the New York State Fair in 2022.
Goldfinger, led by singer John Feldmann, is a pop-punk/ska/alternative rock band best known for ‘90s and 2000s hits like “Superman” and a cover of “99 Red Balloons,” which both have more than 100 million streams on Spotify. Their music has also been featured in movies like “Eurotrip,” “Not Another Teen Movie,” “The Waterboy,” “Kingpin,” “BASEketball” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
“I can’t wait for everyone to hear our version of the Goldfinger song ‘Superman’ featuring Tony Hawk,” Feldmann said in a statement. “Gonna be rad!”
