Dog lovers and horror fans, have I got a movie for you.
Two movies, actually. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
“Good Boy” is a truly unique movie – rather, movies – cleverly directed by Ben Leonberg. His star, Indy – who sorta/kinda plays himself – is the “Good Boy” of the title. He’s also Leonberg’s dog in real life.
‘Good Boy’ (IMDb)
Indy is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever with expressions that could move the hardest of hearts. Leonberg wisely keeps the camera mostly at Indy’s height so we continually see the pooch’s point of view.
Leonberg and Alex Cannon wrote the script, which has minimal dialogue, with a focus on the main human character of Todd (Shane Jensen) and his dog, also named Indy in the film.
At the beginning of the movie, Todd is fund, unconscious and bleeding, by his worried sister. He ends up in a hospital, and, once released, decides to go his late grandfather’s isolated home in the woods to recover,
We see Todd, but usually his face is blurred or in shadow – so much the better to encourage the audience to focus on Indy and what the dog sees. Indy knows that possibly evil forces are at work in the area and even within the house.
We watch Indy as he reacts to sounds, smells and other indicators that Todd doesn’t necessarily notice. As Todd begins to change, Indy becomes truly haunted by his surroundings, which creep into his dreams.
Is Indy imagining things? His every whimper tells us that something is afoot. Is he simply trying to protect Todd, who spends his time watching VHS tapes of his late grandfather?
I’m not going to tell you how this ends. But I must tell you there is a little more than you might expect. I stayed through the credits, which run down the left side of the screen as some more video is shown at the right.
Then the screen goes blank. And suddenly, I was watching another very short, extremely enjoyable movie.
You will too, and you’ll have a fetching time.
Running time: One hour and 12 minutes.
Rated: PG-13 for foul language, blood, and scary images.
In theaters.
