Chris Tomlin took the stage at Trump’s Freedom 250 event as critics shared images of a sparse National Mall crowd, fueling fresh scrutiny of the celebration.
Christian worship singer Chris Tomlin appeared as a special guest at the Trump-backed Freedom 250 celebration, stepping into a program meant to highlight faith and patriotism.
Tomlin, a Grammy-winning contemporary Christian artist known for his song ‘How Great Is Our God and Holy Forever,’ performed during the Great American State Fair’s Faith, Values, and Inspiration day on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Organizers have billed the 16-day fair as a centerpiece of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, with exhibits, military displays, state pavilions and nightly programming.
But as Tomlin took the stage, clips and photos shared on social media appeared to show large gaps in the audience area, fueling fresh mockery of an event that has struggled to shake questions about turnout. Some users described the scene as nearly empty, while allies of the administration have defended the celebration as a free patriotic gathering spread across a broad outdoor site. It comes after JD Vance committed a huge national security breach after viewers spotted a tiny detail in a photo.
The criticism comes after a rocky opening week for Freedom 250. Trump launched the festivities last Wednesday with a campaign-style speech on the Mall, telling supporters, “There has never been anything like the United States of America,” and declaring that “the American Dream is alive again.”
He later claimed on Truth Social that at least 45,000 people attended.
Independent reporting and images from the fair have painted a less crowded picture on several days. The Financial Times reported that many pavilions were sparsely visited and that security and media at times appeared to outnumber guests.
Fox News also drew ridicule after a host said “thousands” were celebrating while footage behind the broadcast showed only scattered visitors.
Freedom 250’s entertainment slate has been another source of attention. Several musicians backed out before the fair opened amid concerns the event had become too closely tied to Trump, who has sought to place himself at the center of the semiquincentennial celebration.
Vanilla Ice, one of the remaining announced acts, later saw his scheduled performance canceled when organizers shut down the fair because of weather.
Tomlin’s appearance fit Wednesday’s faith-themed programming and followed his previous role at Freedom 250’s May prayer event, Rededicate 250.
That event brought conservative Christian leaders and Trump administration officials to the National Mall and drew criticism from some Democrats and religious liberty advocates, who said the program blurred lines between church and state.
Organizers have presented Freedom 250 as a national, nonpartisan effort to celebrate America’s founding.
It comes after a chilling discovery was made at the bottom of the Washington DC Reflecting Pool.
