EXCLUSIVE: Taiwan’s GrX Studio and Lots Home Entertainment are joining forces with Thailand’s Transformation Films to produce a slate of pan-Asian genre films.
The three genre-driven studios have put aside $2m for the production of five Asian horror and action films over the next three years.
The first project from their slate is an untitled Thai horror mystery film directed by Bordeekorn Lohachala and executive produced by Death Whisperer director Taweewat Wantha. Filming has begun, with a release scheduled for 2026.
Taweewat is best known as the director of box office sensation Death Whisperer and its sequel, which took $15.2m (thb510m) in 2023 and $24.7m (thb825m) in 2024 respectively. The latter is the biggest Thai film of all time.
GrX Studio founder Hank Tseng said: “This strategic co-investment partnership aims to build new creative forces and business opportunities and further expand the footprint of Taiwan and Thailand in the region and beyond.”
The investment from GrX Studio is derived from its $50m media fund, the Asian Spring Project, announced in Busan last year. Before venturing into Thai productions, the company has previously produced many successful Taiwanese genre titles such as The Tag-Along film trilogy and Netflix series The Victims’ Game and Copycat Killer.
Taipei-based Lots Home Entertainment, led by general manager Alain Hao, has produced horror smash hits such as The Bridge Curse and its sequel. It is also a close collaborator with GrX Studio.
Bangkok-based Transformation Films, a subsidiary of Major Cineplex Group, has collaborated with South Korea’s CJ ENM on Inhuman Kiss, Netflix’s Deep and most recently Amazon original film Host, a supernatural horror based on Thai folklore about the guardian spirit of newborns.
Transformation Films CEO Sangar Chatchairungruang is attending Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) this week. Separately, the Thai company has two Chinese-language genre titles – Masked Warrior and Haunted Hills – in the Rocket programme, a regional initiative backed by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and spearheaded by AR Asia Production.
