Harry Styles returned to Saturday Night Live (SNL) as both host and musical guest, marking his second time performing both roles on the show. While on stage, Styles took the opportunity to respond to ongoing public discourse about his perceived image and allegations of queerbaiting, directly addressing the topic during his opening monologue in front of a live studio audience. He even proved his point by kissing cast member Ben Marshall on stage.
At the start of his monologue, Styles referenced longstanding discussions about his fashion choices and public persona, saying, “Back then, people seemed to pay a lot of attention to the clothes I was wearing and some people accused me of something called ‘queerbaiting.’ But did it ever occur to you: You don’t know everything about me, Dad!”
The musician then shifted to reflect on his life outside the spotlight, joking about how mundane it had become while he was away from music and touring. He described himself as being “tremendously boring” and observed, “people pretend to find that [his hobbies] interesting” because of his celebrity status, adding, “It’s better than the alternative,” referencing a moment where an image of Prince Andrew appeared on the screen.
Returning to his professional life, Styles shared his enthusiasm about releasing new music. He said he was “happy” to be back at work with a new album entitled Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. During this segment, Styles played with the idea of his album’s title, saying, “What’s better than kissing all the time? Which I don’t actually do, I don’t kiss all the time.”
During his segment, several female cast members, including Chloe Fineman and Sarah Squirm, made playful advances toward him, all of which he politely declined. “I mean, sometimes kissing can be great. You know, if you’re really good at it and you’re a good person.”
When fellow cast member Ben Marshall approached, he responded cheekily and went in for a full-on kiss, jokingly calling it “queerbaiting.”
“C’mon, Ben, everyone knows there’s nothing little about that thang. You’re holding a damn wagon back there.”
This marks the second time the Grammy-winning pop star has taken on dual roles on the NBC sketch comedy series. He last hosted Studio 8H in November 2019 and has also appeared as a musical guest three times with One Direction and once as a solo artist.
