Hayden Panettiere has made it clear that she’s standing by the claims she made in her memoir, This is Me: A Reckoning.
On Wednesday (May 20), the actor appeared on the Tamron Hall Show, where she rejected suggestions that the book’s most disturbing passages were fabricated to boost sales, particularly the stories involving “very famous” men.
“You don’t make a story like that up just to sell a book,” she said. “Sorry, been doing this too long.” That then prompted Hall to agree, who added: “This has nothing to do with that. This is your story. This is your truth.”
Among the passages drawing the most attention is an incident in which she describes being led by a person she had “grown to trust and see as a protector” to a downstairs area of a boat and into a room where an undressed and supposedly well-known Hollywood actor lay in bed.
Hall pointed out that the memoir has readers actively speculating about which celebrities Panettiere is alluding to.
“I wanted to tell my stories without dragging anyone else through the mud,” she said. “This is still an industry I have to exist in, and people are not, like, readily willing to admit to what they did.”
Another story from her memoir that made headlines was about an Oscar-winning actor and director who supposedly exposed himself to her without consent at a party when she was 19.
As she was putting on her coat to leave, she claims the man approached her under the pretense that gum was stuck to his pants. “I looked down and recoiled,” the 36-year-old wrote in her book. “This well-respected, award-winning actor’s testicles were hanging out from his unzipped fly.”
She continued: “The gum on the pants, however, was a head-scratcher. It hadn’t hurt me, and I was sure it was a drunken joke, but I’d never seen a grown man do something like that. I was shocked.”
Panettiere is known for her roles on Heroes and Nashville. Her memoir, This is Me: A Reckoning, is out now.
