Even though Game of Thrones ended with eight seasons, everyone knew that there were several more stories left to tell in the same universe. As a result, George RR Martin and HBO started working on several spin-off projects. In 2022, the first spin-off series, House of the Dragon, premiered and garnered positive reviews. The series is set to return for its third season in 2026, but it won’t be the only Game of Thrones project to premiere next year. A spin-off series, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will expand the universe by telling the unusual story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg.
However, what’s even more impressive is that both shows have already been renewed for additional seasons, signaling HBO’s confidence long before their upcoming premieres. According to the official statement released by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and HBO Max Content, House of the Dragon has been renewed for season four, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has also been confirmed to return for another season.
Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, noted in a statement, “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be.”
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO on Sunday, January 18, 2026, while the second one will arrive in 2027.
On the other hand, the third installment of House of the Dragon is scheduled to release in Summer 2026, with its fourth season to arrive in 2028. Moreover, sources reveal that the prequel series might go beyond Season 4. Earlier, it was established that the show will come to an end with the fourth edition. However, showrunner Ryan Condal is still writing the fourth season, and the recent announcement didn’t confirm that the series will conclude with this installment, suggesting that HBO may be considering extending the show further.
The renewals have not only made fans excited for the franchise’s universe, but also made them realize that they are going to see something special on their screens.
