The downloadable Guide to Buying Adaptive Musical Instruments brings together the latest innovations in adaptive and digital instruments
The Inclusive Music Consortium (IMC) has today announced the launch of a new downloadable resource for those on the hunt for adaptive musical instruments and equipment. The Guide to Buying Adaptive Musical Instruments brings together the latest innovations in accessible acoustic and electronic instruments with links to inclusive retailers, organisations and funding support.
The IMC is a network of specialist organisations working to make the music industry more accessible and inclusive for disabled people. The guide was commissioned by social enterprise Creative United and is accessible through the website for the enterprise’s Take It Away scheme which offers interest-free loans from Arts Council England and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for the purchase of a new musical instrument.
Creative United chief executive Mary-Alice Stack said: ‘As a social enterprise, we’re committed to supporting the creative livelihoods of musicians of all ages and abilities. This guide, alongside our Take It Away website, will help raise awareness and enable access to the wide range of product developments and innovations which are helping break down barriers to participation in music for disabled people.’
Although not exhaustive, the Guide to Buying Adaptive Musical Instruments aims to ‘show what is possible, encourage creativity and experimentation, and signpost disabled musicians and their families to support and advice’. The Take It Away website also features a map to help users find music shops which offer instruments, equipment, technology and tuition suited to disabled musicians – including two retailers specialising in adaptive instruments.
