Christina Applegate revealed she’d been hospitalized after suffering a severe double kidney infection that left her “screaming” in pain earlier this week — but according to a source, her latest health issue has caused her to dig in even more as she fights to live her best life possible.
“This has hit her like a ton of bricks and caused her unbearable pain, but she’s a trooper and showing resilience and incredible mettle,” the source exclusively tells Star.
On the August 5 episode of her MeSsy podcast, the Married…With Children alum, 53 – who also has multiple sclerosis – shared that she was still under medical care as she was being given intravenous antibiotics to fight the infection.
While she’s on the road to recovery, the source says it’s been “hard for her friends and loved ones” who are concerned about how many more health “setbacks” she can handle.

“When an infection spreads to the organs, it’s pretty serious,” adds the source. “This, of course, is more worrisome for someone with MS. It’s horrendous for her to go through, she’s been through so much already, and people around her are in awe how brave and courageous she is, and how she’s managed to still keep her sense of humor.”
“At the same time, they’re acutely aware she’s living with a very difficult condition and these setbacks are a nightmare to deal with,” the source explains.
As Star previously reported, Applegate was diagnosed with MS in 2021 after she struggled with worrying symptoms while filming Dead to Me.
“I couldn’t walk. They had to use a wheelchair to get me to set,” she shared during a 2022 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I was freaking out until someone was like ‘You need an MRI.’ And then, I found out on a Monday after work that I had MS.”
