One Battle After Another might not have been as hyped up as Superman or The Fantastic Four: First Steps to the general public, but it might have been the most anticipated movie for cinephiles. Luckily, Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film has more than lived up to the hype.
If you’re on social media, you’d know that it’s pretty the only thing that film Twitter can talk about right now. While we’ve gotten plenty of great films this year, One Battle After Another feels like the first prestige movie that’s gaining some traction.

Despite being one of the greatest American filmmakers, Anderson has never actually won an Oscar. That’s almost certainly going to change.
As of right now, it’s safe to say that One Battle After Another is the early favorite to win Best Picture at the 2026 Academy Awards, along with many other awards. A lot of people might want to see Sinners win big, but the Academy notoriously hates horror films.
Perhaps it would’ve had a chance had One Battle After Another not been so good. Hamnet from Academy darling Chloé Zhao could gain some momentum, but it’s hard to imagine an Oscar-type movie being better than One Battle After Another.
This is finally the year to give Anderson his flowers, the same way Christopher Nolan finally won his Oscar for Oppenheimer a couple of years ago.
