During his interview with YouTuber BobaTalks, James Gunn was pretty candid about his future with DC. Warner Bros. has recently gone public about being on the market, causing many to be relatively unsure about he future of the DCU. Ultimately, it is up to whoever buys Warner Bros. to determine if they want to maintain the status quo. That said, it’s very likely that they will leave James Gunn in charge of the project. He has completely revolutionized the franchise after Zack Snyder’s somewhat cold start several years ago.
“Yes, they definitely go significantly further than ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ if I … Whether or not that’ll be me that’s able to fulfill that promise depends on a lot of things in life, but yeah,” Gunn told BobaTalks
Starting from Peacemaker, James Gunn has almost singlehandedly spearheaded this new franchise. There are new directors planned for the future, but he has had a very hands-on role in every aspect of the new DCU. James is a comic fan himself and does his best to find the perfect balance between honoring his vision and giving fans what they want to see. In many ways, Gunn has created unique and entertaining versions of many of DC’s most popular characters.

That said, there is no telling what the studio who busy Warner Bros. could decide to do. If they really wanted to, they could restore Zack Snyder and just restart the DCEU. That is extremely unlikely, but it reflects the creative freedom the new studio could have over many fans’ favorite cinematic universe. Even though Gunn has done an amazing job with the project, that doesn’t mean his future is guaranteed.
Overall, James Gunn is one of the leading figures in the new DCU, but with Warner Bros. being sold, he might not be in charge forever. Ultimately, it will depend on the new studio to maintain the status quo or reboot the DC universe for the third time.
