Peacemaker‘s sliding doors story has made for a compelling second season. Yet, somewhere in the multiverse, the entire HBO Max show looks very different. Creator James Gunn recently revealed that he originally wrote the part of Christopher Smith in The Suicide Squad for Dave Bautista. He offered it to John Cena after the Guardians of the Galaxy star turned it down. Now Gunn has shared that he wrote a major role in Peacemaker‘s first season for someone else entirely, as well. He created the role of Clemson Murn for the late Lance Reddick.

On the most recent Peacemaker podcast episode (which we heard about at /Film) Gunn refuted a claim made by his friend and season two star Michael Rooker. The actor said if someone writes a role with a specific person in mind they always think of that specific person even if they don’t end up playing them. Gunn said that isn’t true and mentioned that he wrote the season one role of secret alien Butterfly Clemson Murn for Lance Reddick. When Reddick couldn’t do it Gunn cast Chukwudi Iwuji, who was absolutely fantastic on the show. (He then went on to star in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.)
Gunn said Iwuji “absolutely owned the role” so much that he changed what Gunn initially thought the part entailed.

It was always easy to see why any director would want Reddick. It’s also easy to see why he would have also been an amazing Murn. While many fans knew the late, great actor for his cool, stern, intense, serious demeanor, Reddick was also incredibly funny. He would have fit in perfectly with the world of Peacemaker. And somewhere in a parallel world him and Dave Bautista combined for a different but incredible version of the show. We’re still thrilled with the version we got. We just wish Lance Reddick were still with us so he could eventually join the show in another role.
