James Handy’s girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill, opened up about the morning that the actor was fatally stabbed.
“I didn’t know what was going on. The first time I heard something was happening was when the police showed up,” Gledhill told the Daily Mail on Monday of the events of June 3.
Handy died at the hospital from a stab wound to his chest, allegedly at the hands of Wendy’s adult son, Michael Gledhill.
James Handy’s girlfriend is sharing more details about the actor’s final moments before his fatal stabbing, allegedly at the hands of her 44-year-old son.
Wendy Gledhill opened up about the morning of June 3 in a conversation with the Daily Mail from the front door of the couple’s three-bedroom home in Tarzana, Calif. on Monday, revealing that the morning had been like any other before things took a tragic turn.
“James had gotten up to get the newspaper at about 9 o’clock, but he didn’t make the coffee like he usually does,” Gledhill told the outlet, explaining that Handy usually woke up and headed to the front porch to grab the newspaper, which he read with a cup of coffee. “I just heard the door open because he was getting the paper.”
Gledhill claimed that she remained in bed because she didn’t think there was anything out of the ordinary.

“I can only assume my son was already out there and they started to argue, from my understanding, on the front yard,” she continued. “I didn’t know what was going on. The first time I heard something was happening was when the police showed up.”
As previously reported, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that they responded to a 911 call in which the caller stated, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”
When they arrived at the home Wendy shared with Michael and James, they found 81-year-old Handy in the front yard “unconscious with a stab wound to his chest,” LAPD said in a statement. “He was taken to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, where he was pronounced dead.”
Wendy claimed that the LAPD told her about the 911 call and “they told me someone was wrapped in a blanket outside the house.”
“At first I didn’t know who they were talking about. Then they told me to get away from the door because they thought there was still someone dangerous outside,” she added.
The LAPD identified Wendy’s son, Michael Gledhill, as the suspect in Handy’s slaying. He was taken into custody on June 3 after they said he “flagged down nearby responding officers, telling them he was the one they were looking for.” Michael was taken to Van Nuys Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of one count of murder. His bail was set at $2 million.
According to authorities, the stabbing is believed to be “an isolated incident and there appears to be no danger to the public at this time.”
Wendy previously explained to TMZ that Michael was diagnosed with schizophrenia in July 2025 and had been taking his prescribed medication, but stopped about a week before the Jumanji actor was fatally stabbed.
She reiterated the statement to the Daily Mail, adding that she doesn’t think her son was taking his medication at the time of the alleged attack, but that she doesn’t know for sure.

While Wendy says she has no idea what could have led to the confrontation between Michael and Handy, she’s acknowledged that the two men did not always see eye to eye.
Reflecting on her relationship with the late actor, Wendy admitted that she “remains in shock,” and has not left the home since the tragedy because she is “beyond devastated.”
“I was with James for 31 years and of course I loved him dearly,” she shared. “This is so difficult.”
