Jane Seymour surprised plenty of fans when she traded her wholesome Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman image for a memorable role in the R-rated comedy Wedding Crashers.
It was a career move that stood in sharp contrast to the character many viewers had come to know her for in the ‘90s, but one she never hesitated to make. Reflecting on that unexpected shift during the Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman Reunion Panel at Fanboy Expo Knoxville on July 11 in Tennessee, Seymour revealed that, at the time, some people questioned whether the comedy was the right choice after her hit television series.
“People were going, ‘You should never do that [after] Dr. Quinn. They’ll topple over in horror,’” Seymour recalled. “And I said, ‘Well, it very clearly says R-rated. So if they don’t like R, then just don’t watch it,’ you know?”

The 2005 comedy follows two lifelong friends, played by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, who sneak into weddings to pick up women and enjoy free drinks.
Seymour stepped into the role of Kathleen Cleary, the glamorous matriarch of the Cleary family, whose unexpected flirtation with Wilson’s character became one of the film’s most talked-about moments.

Although one scene in particular sparked plenty of conversation because it appeared to show Seymour topless, she has long clarified that movie magic created a very different reality on set.
“I was never actually naked, by the way, at any time, although that is a bit of a spoiler alert for people that keep going back and hitting pause on the DVR,” she said. “That’s a reflection… They put these things [puts hands on breasts], like you might as well be wearing a small bikini, the way the things are today.”

The role of Kathleen ultimately marked a sharp contrast from the characters that had defined much of Seymour’s career before Wedding Crashers, proving she wasn’t interested in being boxed into one type of performance.
By taking a chance on an R-rated comedy, she introduced audiences to a different comedic side while remaining confident in the choice from the very beginning.
As she put it, “I knew that what I was doing, I was very comfortable with.”
