Jay-Z apologized to fans ahead of his performance at Yankee Stadium on Sunday after it was delayed by more than four hours.
The concert was supposed to start at 8 p.m., but it ultimately started after midnight.
“So let me explain the delay to you guys. There was like 10,000 people outside, and they closed all the doors, because somebody rushed the door, and they closed the door for your guys’ safety and everybody’s safety,” he told fans. “Outside, it’s 10,000 people outside; I don’t want to start music and people be trampled. So I know, I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody is OK.”
According to Yankee Stadium, hundreds of people in large groups who did not have tickets tried to get in. A video posted on Instagram shows a handful of fans storming through a turnstile.
Due to the security breach, the stadium went into a full lockdown, leaving fans waiting both inside and outside.
A statement from The Yankees, Roc Nation and Live Nation reads, “On Sunday evening at various fan entrances at Yankee Stadium, hundreds of individuals in large groups — who did not have tickets for tonight’s performance — stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security. As a result, gates at all entrances of the stadium were closed for an extended period of time. With the thoughtful guidance of the NYPD, gates were reopened cautiously and carefully to ensure the safety of those inside and outside.”
Jay-Z held a three-night residency at Yankee Stadium. According to the reports, more than 45,000 people had tickets to his final concert, which was sold out.
The show went on until just before 3 a.m. and featured superstars like Rihanna, Usher and Beyoncé.
According to police, no one was injured and no arrests were made in connection with the security breach.
