Jennie Garth is opening up about her time working with Dan Schneider, the disgraced Nickelodeon producer who has faced allegations of inappropriate behavior.
During the Beverly Hills, 90210 actress’ appearance on the Monday, April 13, episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, Garth talked about her four seasons as Val Tyler on the TV sitcom What I Like About You, which also starred Amanda Bynes.
“I was so happy to get that show,” Garth, 54, explained, revealing that she was called in by cocreator Wil Calhoun. “Another guy was also executive producing it.”
“I’ve selectively forgotten his name at the moment. He was part of that big scandal,” she said, referring to the explosive Investigation Discovery docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. “Dan Schneider.”
When asked by podcast host Dax Shepard if she was getting “bad vibes” from Schneider at the time, Garth replied, “Yeah.”
“I was to the point where I said to Wil, like, ‘I would rather just communicate solely with you. I trust you. I think that you have my best interest in mind, and I don’t feel that way with your partner. So, I’d rather just be with you,’” she said. “And he was like, ‘No problem.’”

When Garth was asked if she saw Bynes — who did not participate in Quiet on Set — “destroyed by [Schneider],” the mother of three said, “Not specifically him. I think there were a lot of problems in this ecosystem of her [world].”
Schneider, who created Bynes’ The Amanda Show, has long faced allegations of creating a toxic work environment and sexual misconduct.
Though Schneider, 60, has apologized for his behavior in the workplace, he’s denied sexual abuse allegations and sued the makers of the docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, claiming it wrongly implied that he sexually abused child actors.
Quiet on Set made explosive allegations and revelations about what it was like for the child actors working on TV in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Around the time of its release, TMZ reported that Bynes and both of her parents, Lynn and Rick Bynes, were approached about recounting their experiences for the doc but chose not to participate.
One source told the outlet that the Hairspray actress did not want to participate because she did not have a bad experience, or a similar one, to the ones described in the doc.
