Hudson starred alongside McConaughey in the film that followed a women’s magazine writer and an advertising executive who both begin a relationship with ulterior motives: to see how quickly each can force the other to fall in love, then break up with them.
In one scene, Hudson’s character Andie Anderson intentionally torments Ben Berry (McConaughey) by repeatedly sending him back to the concession stand during the crucial final seconds of the game.

Hudson paid homage to the film recently, in season 2 of the Netflix series Running Point, when, moments after calling off her wedding to Lev (Max Greenfield), her character Isla looks directly at the camera and quips, “That’s how you lose a guy in 10 minutes.”
Speaking to PEOPLE about the callback, show creator Mindy Kaling said of the moment, “Listen, listen. I know it’s corny to be meta with Kate’s movies. I was 80% certain that Kate was going to be like, ‘Hey, Mindy. I get what you’re trying to do here. It’s corny. We can’t do it.’ “
Hudson herself admitted she’s “really weird about that stuff,” but said the line “was really fun,” so she made an exception.
“And it is corny,” Kaling added. “I can say that it is corny, and it is a wink to one of her most iconic roles, but it’s fun. And I was really surprised, to be honest, that it remained.”
