If Kelsea Ballerini has one lesson to impart from her 2022 divorce from Morgan Evans, it’s the importance of financial freedom.
“I’m very wary to speak on divorce anymore,” Ballerini, 32, began on the Tuesday, June 23, episode of SoFi’s “Richer Lives” podcast. “I will say, just in the name of talking to women [and] strictly through the lens of financial, I think when you are entering into buying a house with somebody or opening a joint account with somebody or getting married and joining all of it, the most important thing you can do is have financial transparency.”
Ballerini acknowledged that there are currently “a lot of women breadwinners,” so protecting individual assets has become increasingly important.
“I think more and more in today’s culture and society and truly, thank God, oftentimes the income is either a match or we have a lot of women breadwinners now,” the singer stated. “[It] is even more reason to really be transparent on where it’s coming from, how you’re blending it, where it’s going, and how to protect it as a unit.”
While Ballerini acknowledged that future brides “never want to prepare for the worst,” that is exactly what should be done before walking down the aisle.
“It’s also important to prepare for the worst for yourself,” Ballerini said. “You just truly never know where life’s going to bring you, and I think that would be my biggest advice is, like, you always want to make sure that you are financially independent on your own to the best of your ability even when you’re in the happiest, healthiest relationship that you still have you and that you know exactly what you and that other person are bringing to the table and what table you’re bringing it to.”
Ballerini married Evans, 41, in 2017, after the pair signed a prenuptial agreement. The duo split in 2022, finalizing their divorce that same year. Per court documents obtained by Us Weekly, Ballerini and Evans divided joint household property and sold their joint house.

In the months after their divorce, Ballerini and Evans each penned multiple breakup songs about what went wrong.
“In the hindsight of my last five years, I would never say that my music has gone too far,” Ballerini noted on Tuesday of her songwriting inspiration. “I would say that me talking about my music has gone too far and no one needs to know about my real life anymore. It’s in the music and it always will be in the music and that’s always how it’s been, but I think … I just talked a lot.”
Ballerini later dated Outer Banks actor Chase Stokes on and off from 2023 to early 2026, while Evans found love with American Idol alum Laci Kaye Booth in 2024.
