Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, 70, has reconciled with his daughter Greer after a 12-year estrangement, following an unexpected encounter at a Christmas tree lot.
The actor, who is father to eight children from various relationships, reconnected with Greer in a chance meeting that his daughter recently discussed on a podcast.
Kelsey had separated from Greer’s mother, stylist Barrie Buckner, when Greer was just four years old, and the two didn’t cross paths again until she turned 16.
At that time, Kelsey discovered her working at the Christmas tree lot and approached her with his contact information.
Recalling the moment on the Pretty Basic Podcast, Greer explained: “He came up to me and said: ‘Are you Greer?’ And I said: ‘Yes, I am’. Then he went, ‘I’m … ‘ And I was like: ‘I know who you are. Duh'”
In a frank discussion about her relationship with her father, Greer revealed she had previously spotted him at a Blockbuster store years before their reunion, but felt too intimidated to make contact and ‘ran away’. She also shared early childhood memories involving her famous father, including attending a party and watching him support her in a school play.
She said: “I remember going to Frasier at one point and being three, probably, and wondering why the girls in the back kept redoing the scene, but I didn’t know what that meant. Then I think my mom took me out because I was loud. I think I went backstage.
“I have a memory of going to a party at my dad’s. I have a memory of him going to my preschool play of The Wizard of Oz, which he also remembers because we’ve talked about it … After that, I don’t know.”
Greer recalls spotting her father during a broadcast on Entertainment Tonight, explaining: “My dad wasn’t always on there, but there was something about him buying a Hamptons house and going through the house, and there was going to be plenty of room for Mason, my little sister, to run around in.
“I just looked and my mom was like: ‘Are you okay?’ I was like: ‘Yeah.’ It’s not about it’s the life I could be living, but it was like, oh, that wasn’t my life’.”
Audiences first discovered Kelsey in 1984, when he joined the third season of the beloved sitcom Cheers as psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane, remaining with the series through its finale in season 11.
He went on to portray the character as lead of the successful spinoff Frasier from 1993 to 2004.
