Ken Jennings Says This Part of ‘Jeopardy!’ Was ‘So Cringey’ originally appeared on Parade.
Ken Jennings might be a Jeopardy! legend and the show’s current host, though he admitted that he found one part of the show to be “so cringey” when he was a kid.
“So, I have to admit, as a kid I found the Jeopardy! interviews so cringey that I would leave the room,” Jennings, 51, said about the Q&A portion with the show’s contestants during the August 10 episode of the “Lovett or Leave It” podcast. “That’s my Jeopardy! origin story.”
He continued, “These people mean well, but you make them stop playing Jeopardy! for a second to talk about their cat or their trip to Thailand or something, and they’re not there for that. They just want to answer the little questions!”
Now that he’s the host of the iconic game show, Jennings said that he does his best to keep the interviews interesting.
“I try to make it the least bad it can be, and get out of there,” he shared. “My promise to you, the viewer.”
Podcast host Jon Lovett asked Jennings how many times he has had to tell contestants they can’t talk about trains, which made Jennings laugh. “My version of that joke would be cats,” he responded. “‘You would not believe the crazy thing my cat does!’ And I’m like, ‘I bet I can. Does it sit on top of the couch? That’s nuts.'”
Amy Schneider, a 40-consecutive-game winner on Jeopardy!, also appeared on the podcast episode, and she shared insight into what Jennings is like as a host.
“I have to say, as somebody who’s seen Ken work up close, his ability to laugh at the end of any story is remarkable,” she said.

Jennings added, “I’ve spent my whole life trying to get out of conversations in 25 seconds. That’s why Jeopardy! host is the job for me.”
He became the show’s sole host role in 2023. Following longtime host Alex Trebek’s death in 2020, Jennings shared hosting duties with Mayim Bialik until she stepped away from the show.
Prior to his hosting role, Jennings won 74 consecutive games in 2004 and holds the show’s record for most money won in regular-season play.
