Kenny Chesney is ready to open up about his “deep” relationship with Ethel Kennedy.
It’s been a year since the sister-in-law of former President John F. Kennedy passed away at 96 years old. Several Hollywood stars attended her funeral including Sting, Stevie Wonder and the 57-year-old country singer, who performed Johnny Cash’s hit song You Are My Sunshine at the service.
It turns out his touching rendition had an underlying, personal meaning as Kenny now reveals he and Ethel were in “deep soul love” with one another.
In his new memoir Heart Life Music, he recalled the moment he first met Ethel. He said, “[Rory Kennedy] invited me to come to Hyannis Port to meet her mother, Ethel, the day before our Gillette shows.”
When he first arrived at the Kennedy compound, he felt like “the history hit him.”
He remembered seeing black and white photos of key figures of the prominent family like Bobby and John F. Kennedy.
“They’re sitting in this wonderful living room, where I was seated, waiting for JFK to win by that narrow margin,” he added.
He didn’t begin to see the home as a place of comfort rather than a grand, monumental space until he met the socialite, saying, “When Ethel Kennedy sees you and reaches for a hug, she’s so radiant and welcoming, her presence eclipses everything else.”
“From the moment I sat down on the couch with her, there wasn’t any history,” he elaborated. “I didn’t think about her as an activist, an icon, but someone filled with life, who filled everyone with love.”
After their initial meeting, they enjoyed a blissful day together, talking, sailing in Nantucket Sound and playing volleyball with the family’s kids.

“We fell in deep soul love. Her spirit is so engaging, I wanted to soak it all up,” Kenny confessed.
The singer said that day was “only the beginning, describing their connection as “one of those written-in-the-universe things.
“Everything about us clicked. The humor, curiosity, passion for living was our reality,” he wrote. “We shared so many laughs and moments.”
He continued to gush over the late socialite, before concluding, “She was ninety, having more fun than people a third her age. Nobody loved living, her family, dogs, or causes more.”
Despite their connection, Kenny was taken by surprise when he was asked to perform at her funeral. Nevertheless, he took the opportunity to honor the woman he describes as “sunshine.”
