Reconciling with his father doesn’t automatically secure Prince Harry a position within King Charles’ monarchy, according to palace insiders.
The Duke of Sussex engaged in a 54-minute discussion with the King at Clarence House earlier this month, and father and son appear to be working toward repairing their strained relationship following years of bitter conflict.
However, the King’s renewed dialogue with his younger son doesn’t mean Harry will be easily welcomed back into Royal duties, partially due to a regulation established by the late Queen that prohibits family members from conducting official business while receiving compensation from other sources. The news comes as Prince Harry’s secret meeting with another royal during UK visit is revealed.
After withdrawing from his Royal responsibilities in 2020, Harry has accumulated substantial wealth through profitable Spotify and Netflix contracts and has been compensated generously for public speaking events.
The career path he has established outside the Royal Family would essentially be incompatible with any role he might aspire to resume in the UK.
“The King has been absolutely clear in upholding his late mother’s decision that there can be no ‘half-in, half-out’ public role for members of the family,” a source revealed to The Telegraph.
Although the Duke hasn’t definitively expressed his desire to return to the UK, reports indicate he hopes to make more frequent public appearances in Britain, similar to his early September visit when he supported charities and attended an awards ceremony. Insiders revealed to the Mail on Sunday that the Sussexes’ team is “tentatively discussing” increased interactions between Harry and Prince Charles, potentially including a joint appearance to demonstrate “public unity”.
These apparent moves towards resuming aspects of his life as a senior Royal have drawn criticism, particularly following the dramatic severing of ties with his UK family after relocating to the US with wife Meghan and airing their dirty laundry in his upcoming memoir Spare, set for release in 2023.
The Queen announced that members of the Royal family could “no longer formally represent” her after choosing financial independence, following the couple’s decision to step back from their duties.
However, she gave them her blessing to maintain their “private patronages and associations”, including the Invictus Games, a multi-sport event for veterans founded by Harry in 2014, which will return to Britain in 2027.
Regardless of whether he’s aiming to gradually reintegrate into the Royal family, Harry seems content to have mended fences with his father. He expressed regret over their estrangement during a BBC interview in May, amid a dispute over his government-funded police protection.
At the time, he stated: “I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff, but it would be nice to reconcile.”
The 41 year old revealed to The Guardian this month, following his exclusive meeting with the King: “The focus [this year] really has to be on my dad.”
