The Secretary of Homeland Security appeared on NBC’s Meet The Press to discuss the National Guard shooting in Washington D.C. that killed one soldier and left another fighting for life
Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, faced a barrage of criticism on social media as she marked her 54th birthday with her family.
Despite the celebratory occasion, not everyone was in a festive mood. Critics took to social media platforms to express their disapproval after Kristi appeared on NBC News’ Meet the Press to discuss the recent shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C.
Viewers were outraged over the situation and directed their anger at Kristi for her appearance and the US administration’s handling of immigration issues. The uproar was triggered when it was revealed that the suspected shooter was Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who arrived in the U.S. in 2021 and was granted asylum in 2024, reports the Irish Star.

Lakanwal, who lives in Washington with his wife and five children, entered the U.S. through Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden administration program that evacuated and resettled tens of thousands of Afghans following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, according to officials.
One viewer watching the show asked AI bot Grok, “@Grok Did Kristi Noem have plastic surgery? Is that why her face looks like that?” It then replied, “Changes in her appearance over time, with experts speculating on fillers, Botox, or minor lifts based on photos. It could also be makeup, hair, or aging. I’m unsure without direct confirmation.”
Another critic watching said, “And Secretary Kristi Noem has been working tirelessly since January 20th to make sure the plastic sticking to her face doesn’t melt in the hot southern sun.”
A third scathed, “You know what else was completely abandoned during the Biden administration? Kristi Noem’s original face.”
A fourth quipped, “Court orders? Human rights? Rule of law? Trump and Noem think they can ignore it all. No amount of plastic surgery can conceal Kristi’s crimes.”
A fourth social media user posted, “Under whose watch? I thought Trump drained the swamp! ! Kristi Noem could’ve got him too. She was probably too busy getting plastic surgery 🙁 Blood is on Trump’s hands. Why didn’t he deport him? ? ?”.
A fifth questioned, “Outside of Kristi Noem not taking responsibility for Trump giving the shooter asylum, did she have more plastic surgery? #ThisWeek.”
Authorities report that Lakanwal allegedly took a position close to Farragut West Metro Station before opening fire around 2:15 p.m.
He reportedly struck a female security guard in the chest before shooting her in the head. Lakanwal reportedly shot at another guard before a third soldier arrived and subdued him.
President Trump has since confirmed the death of one of the victims, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom.
He stated, “Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia, one of the guardsmen that we’re talking about, highly respected, young, magnificent person… She’s just passed away. She’s no longer with us.”
He also revealed that the second victim, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, is “fighting for his life.”
President Trump further announced that he will now “permanently pause migration” to the US from all “third-world countries.”
