Despite Meghan’s wedding dress captivating many fans around the world, the late Queen reportedly did not approve of her insistence on wearing a veil for her big day. According to William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, a new book by royal editor Russell Myers, the late Queen “disagreed” with Meghan’s wish to wear a veil because she was a divorcée.
He wrote: “The Queen was upset that Harry had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the ceremony at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, instead of the Dean of Windsor, as tradition would dictate.
“[Royal author Sally] Bedell Smith described how Meghan ‘refused’ to tell the Queen about her wedding dress and had insisted on wearing a veil, which the Queen privately disagreed with, due to her being a divorcee.”
Like Meghan, Queen Camilla and Princess Anne – who were both previously married before their current marriages – decided against wearing veils or classic white gowns.
The former working royal was previously married to American film producer Trevor Engelson between 2011 and 2014.
Meghan chose to wear a custom-made veil, which paid homage to all 53 Commonwealth countries. Her wedding gown was described by Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy.
In a statement at the time, Kensington Palace announced: “Ms. Markle expressed the wish of having all 53 countries of the Commonwealth with her on her journey through the ceremony.
“Ms. Waight Keller designed a veil representing the distinctive flora of each Commonwealth country united in one spectacular floral composition.”
Since stepping down as working members of the Royal Family, Meghan and Harry reside in the US with their children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.
