Invented during the lockdowns era of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bandcamp Friday has proved to be a lasting promotion – continuing after its parent platform was acquired by Songtradr in 2023. The latest event was held on 1 August, with Bandcamp waiving its rev-share of sales for the day in familiar fashion.
The company says that over the 24 hours, artists and labels sold more than $3.5m of music and merch. That’s encouraging, because it’s higher than the $3.2m of sales in the previous Bandcamp Friday event on 2 May. Bandcamp also noted in its announcement that the total sales generated so far from Bandcamp Fridays is more than $140m – not far off 10% of the platform’s $1.5bn of sales to date.
The next event will be held on 1 September, with Bandcamp also pre-announcing a new feature called Bandcamp Clubs – “a new way for fans to discover music, connect more deeply with artists and each other, and explore monthly selections curated by trusted tastemakers”. More details are promised on that “soon”.
