In February, Heather the Jerk released Scroll If You Love Devil, one of the year’s best punk rock albums. In my review, I called Wisconsin songwriter Heather Sawyer’s sound a “homespun DIY style” that “exists in service to old-world pop music.” The punchy garage tones and jolts of punk-pop called to mind Brill Building singalongs but with extra sharp fangs. Tracks like “I’m On My Way” and “Bahboozay (Ode to a Cat)” deployed an onslaught of bratty guitar fuzz and head-rattling drums that I haven’t stopped thinking about. I could try coming up with something new to say about the album, but I think I nailed it four months ago: “The sonic fuckery of Scroll If You Love Devil burns fast and high.”
Now, MPLS LTD is readying a vinyl release of the album with four new songs not originally featured on the cassette edition. The wax won’t be ready until August 27, but hopefully Sawyer’s new single, “Write A Letter,” can hold you over until then. It comes with a music video animated by Horriblparty, an artist Sawyer is a big fan of. Scroll If You Love Devil should be a bigger album, so I’m glad we’re getting four extra Heather the Jerk songs from that same universe.
Paste doesn’t really do song premieres anymore, but if every band in the world started writing songs as good as “Write A Letter,” rock music might be able to retire its deathbed. So do yourself a flavor: queue it up and play it loud. It won’t take but a minute or so. I’m not one to quote press releases too often, but the copy for Scroll If You Love Devil sums it up perfectly: “The only jerk thing Sawyer could do at this point would be to stop making music.” Amen. Get a load of “Write A Letter” below and leave a comment about how good it sounds.
