Love Island Cop Sean Reifel Faces Custody Battle Drama

As if resigning from a small-town Pennsylvania police department to join Love Island USA wasn’t generating enough headlines, contestant Sean Reifel is now facing fresh scrutiny after details of an ongoing custody dispute involving his young son surfaced shortly before the show’s Season 8 premiere.

According to court records obtained by The celebrity.land, Reifel filed a custody complaint in Pennsylvania against his former partner, Nicole Santiago, in January 2025. The legal dispute centers on the couple’s son, Ravello, who was less than a year old when the case began. While many of the filings remain sealed, court documents show that a judge later established a temporary co-parenting arrangement, granting both parents shared legal custody.

Court records indicate that Reifel was living outside Pennsylvania when the temporary custody order was issued. Under the arrangement, he was granted parenting time on a rotating schedule, while both parents retained authority over major decisions involving their son’s medical care, education, religious upbringing, and extracurricular activities.

The order also included a non-disparagement provision directing both parties to avoid making negative comments about one another in situations that could reach the child, including through social media activity.

Court filings cited by the Post also referenced plans for Reifel to relocate back to Pennsylvania in mid-2025. Public records later showed he joined the Bethlehem Police Department, where he was officially sworn in as an officer in August of that year.

Before viewers even had a chance to watch him in the Love Island USA villa, Reifel found himself at the center of controversy after Bethlehem city officials publicly criticized his decision to leave the police force in order to appear on the show.

Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds criticized Reifel’s departure from the department. Reynolds said the city invested significant taxpayer resources into training him and expressed disappointment that another vacancy had been created in an already challenging hiring environment.

Because department policy prohibits active officers from participating in reality television programs, Reifel was required to resign rather than take a leave of absence.

Despite the backlash, Reifel has also received public support from family members amid the growing scrutiny. Commenting on an E! News Instagram post about the controversy, his sister pushed back on criticism from Bethlehem officials and argued that the situation could have been handled differently.

“This could have been a great opportunity for the mayor and police department to connect with the community, generate positive publicity for the town, and help improve perceptions of law enforcement,” she wrote.

She added that city leaders instead “chose a response that will likely reinforce the stereotypes they should be working to change. I couldn’t be more excited for my brother and this amazing opportunity. We’ll be cheering him on every step of the way.”
