Matt Damon was seeing moments of beauty everywhere while filming The Odyssey — even unintentional ones.
During his visit to The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Jimmy Fallon asked the 55-year-old about a hilarious bit miscommunication that unfolded between him and his costar Tom Holland, 30, while they were shooting the Christopher Nolan epic.
“Yeah, it’s not in the movie,” Damon confessed of the incident as the audience laughed. “Well, and here’s why.”

Not wanting to give away too much of Homer’s nearly 3,000-year-old poem, Damon explained that there is a scene in the film that involves his character Odysseus and his son Telemachus (Holland).
“There’s a moment where we see each other and I’m on a boat and he’s on the shore,” he said. “And I saw him — and I was kind of on this boat all day separated from the crew — and he was putting his hand on his heart, and so I started to do it, too.”
Damon saw Holland’s gesture and, naturally, assumed it was a touching and subtle outpouring of love between father and son during a particularly poignant scene.
“At the end of the day, we reconnected and I was like, ‘Chris told you to do that? Put your hand on your heart?’” he recalled. “And he goes, ‘Mate, my costume was choking me.’”

So, basically, the opposite of the thoughtful sign Damon thought it was. “I’m nearsighted,” he said. “From where I was standing, I thought he was, like, saluting me. That it was like a father-son moment.”
Damon quipped, “Needless to say, it’s not in the final film.”
Written and directed by Nolan, The Odyssey follows Odysseus and his perilous, 10-year journey home to Ithaca following the events of the Trojan War. Nolan previously worked with Damon on Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
Accompanying Damon and Holland on the adventure are Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Himesh Patel, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, and more.
The Odyssey sails into theaters on Friday. Watch Damon discuss the film in the video above.
