Meghan Markle faced criticism from a royal expert who suggested one of the photos she shared to commemorate her eighth wedding anniversary this week “should have been redacted”.
The Duchess of Sussex celebrated her eighth anniversary with Prince Harry on Tuesday by sharing a collection of images and videos on social media.
Harry and Meghan tied the knot on May 19, 2018, in Windsor. On Tuesday morning, midnight US time, Meghan posted 24 previously unseen photos from the ceremony and reception, captured by photographer Chris Allerton.
The uploads included images of the couple from the ceremony, alongside more personal snapshots from the reception at Windsor Castle. The Duchess accompanied both collections with the caption “Eight years ago today…” along with moon and sun emojis.
Featuring a blend of black-and-white and color photographs, the new images reveal behind-the-scenes moments from their official wedding portraits, including Harry giving his wedding speech and guests at the ceremony.
The second post depicts the couple celebrating together in the evening, spinning and dipping on the dance floor before sharing a kiss.
Meghan acknowledged the “wonderful” Chris Allerton, the photographer responsible for the images.
One photo from the reception captured the couple sharing a passionate kiss, while another showed Meghan kissing her husband and cradling his face as he displayed an animated expression.
Now, a royal expert has criticized the Duchess for posting the photo, calling it “ghastly”.
Veteran royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams took to his X account to express his views on the photo.
He said: “This is a ghastly photo. Meghan has released it, along with others, to commemorate their 8th wedding anniversary.
“They look like a couple of drunks & this should have been redacted. Perhaps it’s a metaphor for what she has done to his relations with his family!”
The Duchess continued celebrating her special day through Tuesday evening, by posting a series of intimate videos from her home in Montecito, in which Prince Harry can be seen surprising her with an anniversary cake and a penguin sculpture.
Their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet can also be heard singing and cheering in the background.
