New research findings show that California’s primary wildfire season begins earlier each year, with human-driven climate change being a key factor.
The journal ‘Science Advances’ reveals that fire season now starts 46 days sooner in the Cascades, 31 days earlier in the Northern Basin, and 24 days ahead of schedule in the Sierra Nevada – all regions located within California.

The study indicates that summer fire activity across vast portions of the state has advanced into spring by as much as two months since the early 1990s.
This year, the Gifford Fire, which ignited on August 1, has emerged as the state’s largest wildfire to date, according to CBS News reports. Lyz Bantilan, spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, revealed that the agency had been flooded with complaints about ash and smoke.
During the most severe blazes earlier this month, she advised local outlet KSBY: “When the air quality is affected by a wildfire, the best protection that you can give yourself is to stay indoors as much as possible with your windows and your door shut and some sort of air purifier device.”
As of Monday, August 18, the Gifford Fire had spread to 131,589 acres and was 95 percent contained, with 2,713 personnel deployed to the scene.
Teams are focusing on restoration efforts and assisting affected communities, spreading soil and vegetation, enhancing drainage systems, and promoting natural rehabilitation. The blaze has demolished five structures, and at least nine injuries have been linked to it.
