Meghan Markle has said her boundaries “became stronger” after achieving worldwide fame as part of the British royal family.
The Duchess of Sussex, who married Prince Harry in 2018, was already a famous actress thanks to her role as Rachel Zane in the paralegal drama Suits.
However, she reached new heights of notoriety when she became a senior royal – with both her and her husband being constantly in the headlines since they stepped down from their roles in January 2020 and moved to California.
The couple are now based in Montecito with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, but have been more outspoken lately, with Meghan returning to social media after launching her new lifestyle brand As Ever, and they have also been attending more events.
Last month, the Sussexes attended the annual Project Healthy Minds gala in New York City, where they received a prestigious humanitarian award for their continued advocacy around mental health awareness and emotional wellbeing.
Meghan also caused a sensation when she made a surprise appearance at the Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week to support her friend Pierpaolo Piccioli as he made his debut with the brand.
“I was excited for him,” Meghan said. “I reached out and I said, ‘Happy to come and support you.’ We kept it a secret, and it was really fun.”
The mom-of-two said she enjoys “being able to do both” playing with her children but also being out there and doing the things she enjoys the most.
“I think the moment that you start making all of your personal decisions based on external judgment, then you lose your authenticity,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
After journalist Kaitlyn Greenidge told Meghan it sounds like she has good boundaries, she replied, “I think my boundaries became stronger once I came into the public eye in this very…” before pausing briefly.
The 44-year-old then said, “I could think of any adjective to fill the blank. And it would probably work. You find different ways to protect yourself, whether that’s self-preservation or it’s just growing up.”
In the interview, Meghan also insisted “there’s no such thing as perfect” as she opened up about the mistakes she has made in life.
The duchess said she is trying to give herself “grace” to make mistakes as she believes there is a lot to learn from them. After being asked what she has learned from her mistakes, she replied, “You learn not to do it again.”
She explained, “If it all goes swimmingly, you don’t learn from it. If you don’t learn anything, you’re not going to grow.”
It comes as Meghan is set to make her acting return, joining stars like Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Brit Henry and Jack Quaid for the production of Close Personal Friends, after she was seen filming in Pasadena, California, on November 5.
Meghan is playing herself in the Amazon MGM Studios production about two couples, one famous and the other not.
A studio source told The Sun, “This is a massive moment for Meghan and signifies a return to doing what she truly loves.
“She has been swamped with offers but this one felt right. It is Meghan’s way of gently putting her toe back in the water and seeing how she enjoys being back on set.
“Everyone involved is super-excited, and have been sworn to secrecy about her involvement.” The newspaper reported that Harry is “really supportive and quite simply wants Meghan to do whatever brings her joy.”
