Meghan Markle has chosen to remain silent on Donald Trump’s actions, despite a history of verbal clashes between the US leader and the Sussexes.
During an appearance on The Circuit YouTube show, host Emily Chang questioned Meghan, a Los Angeles native, about the recent conflicts between locals and ICE agents following the implementation of stringent immigration laws.
Chang brought up Meghan’s 2016 interview on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, during which Meghan, then an actress before her relationship with Prince Harry, had some “choice words” for Trump.
In that 2016 interview, Meghan labeled Trump as “divisive and misogynistic”, adding: “You don’t really want that kind of world.”
Emily queried Meghan about these comments, asking: “Are there things you’re dying to say or do right now but you feel like you can’t?”
Meghan responded, “I think right now it’s a really interesting time for the entire world. I just hope people are able to maintain the values that they feel are important to them, feel safe, and remember our humanity with each other through all of it.
“However polarised the world can feel, you just go back to the fact that we are all human beings and try to find a way to connect rather than divide.”
The ongoing feud between President Trump and the Sussexes has been a hot topic for years. When Harry and Meghan relocated from Canada to California in 2020 after leaving the UK, there was rampant speculation about who would cover their private security costs.
Trump made it clear that it wouldn’t be the US government. In March 2020, he tweeted, “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen and the United Kingdom.
It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now that they have left Canada for the US, the US will not pay for their security protection. It was later clarified that the couple had no intention of asking for security from the government and would foot the bill themselves.
Shortly after Harry and Meghan’s move to California, Trump was running for reelection at the end of his first term in office and faced off against current President Joe Biden. During the campaign, the Sussexes appeared in a video urging Americans to ‘vote against hate speech’.
While no names were directly mentioned, the comments were perceived as a nod towards Trump and an endorsement of Biden. This led to accusations of violating the Sandringham Summit agreement, established when the couple stepped down from their Royal duties in 2020.
Trump later voiced his disapproval of Meghan, stating he was “no fan” and wished Harry luck, adding, “I wish a lot of luck to Harry, he’s going to need it.”
In recent times, Harry has been embroiled in controversy over his visa that permits him to reside in California. Following his admission of using marijuana, cocaine, and psychedelic mushrooms in his contentious memoir Spare, the conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation, filed a lawsuit.
They demanded that the US Government disclose records about the Duke’s US visa application to verify if his drug use was declared.
Before a decision was reached in the case, Trump criticized the Biden administration for preserving the confidentiality of Harry’s immigration application to “protect Harry.”
Trump faced further questions about Harry during a GB News interview with Nigel Farage. When asked if there would be any “special privileges” for the prince, Trump responded, “No. We’ll have to see if they know something about the drugs, and if he lied, they’ll have to take appropriate action.”
However, in February of this year, Trump clarified that he would not be taking action against Harry, stating he had “enough problems with his wife” and labeling her as terrible.
In recent weeks, Trump has commented on the Royal Family during a trip to Scotland, with King Charles expected to host him for a state visit soon.
He stated: “Being with Charles, Camilla, and everybody, I’ve got to know a lot of the family members. They are great people. They are really great people.”
However, he added, “And in that sense, I think the UK is very lucky, you could have people that weren’t great people. I don’t know if I can say that, but you could have people that weren’t.”
Some social media users interpreted his comments as a veiled criticism of Harry and Meghan.
