The Sussexes are following American traditions and are gearing up to celebrate Thanksgiving Day.
In her latest newsletter for her lifestyle brand, As Ever, Meghan, 44, gave a rare peek at her and her husband Prince Harry’s plans for Thanksgiving.
Meghan said that in preparation for when the day comes around, she and Harry—with the help of their children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, harvest sage in the garden of their Montecito, California, home to use as seasoning for their homemade feast.
Sage is one of Meghan’s favorite flavors, the newsletter explains, which is why she has been sharing clips and images of herself “flowering sage” in her garden on Instagram over the last year.
“Those photos you’ve seen this year on our Instagram of Meghan walking through what seems like lavender, with its gorgeous purple hue, actually share the beauty of flowering sage (Fun fact: the varietal is called Santa Barbara),” the newsletter continued.
Last year, Meghan and Harry had a different kind of guest taking up all their attention. At the time, the former actress urged Americans to “open their arms” to new people this year on the holidays after she admitted that she felt “lonely” in the Royal Family.
She suggested that people follow in her footsteps, as she revealed that she had opened her door to A-lister and friend Gloria Steinem, 91.
In an interview with Marie Claire, the mother of two, who lives in Montecito, California, revealed that she wanted Americans to keep in mind their friends who didn’t have family to celebrate the holidays with. This plea prompted her to share how she and her family made Gloria feel right at home over the festive period.
“I was thinking about, in the past few years of having Thanksgiving here, like many of us, I think you always make sure there’s room at the table for your friends who don’t have family, which is really key,” Meghan said as she revealed Gloria came for Thanksgiving in 2023.
However, Meghan insisted to the publication that their holiday celebrations were “always pretty low-key.”
The Suits star continued to gush over her usual Thanksgiving plans, adding, “We’re always making sure we have something fun to do. Like any other family, you spend time having a great meal, and then what do you do? Play games, all the same stuff, someone brings a guitar — fun. I love the holidays.
Meghan said that spending the special days with her children got “better” every year, sharing, “At first, I think as a mom with children you’re just enjoying having them there, but they’re not understanding everything that’s happening yet. But now we’re at the age where I just can’t wait to see it through their lens every year,”
The mom of two also revealed that they have been creating “traditions” for holidays, such as leaving “carrots for reindeer.”
Since quitting their royal duties in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have spoken out several times about how Meghan struggled to adapt to life in the Royal Family – and how being a member of the Firm is “nothing like what it looks like.”
