Mel Schilling never lost sight of what matters most in life.
And the Married at First Sight U.K. host’s devotion to her family was most evident to her husband Gareth Brisbane, who confirmed her death March 24 after a two-year battle with colon cancer. She was 54.
In a post on Schilling’s Instagram page following her passing, Brisbane described how she “nailed” her role as a mom to their daughter Maddie, 11, while also fulfilling her TV duties.
“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling—matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV,” he wrote. “To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”
Brisbane also offered insight into his bittersweet farewell with Schilling—who hosted the Australian version of the reality series as well—after she tackled her health battle with “courage, grace, compassion and empathy.”
“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,” he shared. “It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.”
