KARACHI:

‘Mera Lyari’ has arrived in cinemas to an enthusiastic response from audiences and members of the entertainment industry, with viewers praising the production for presenting a human and hopeful portrayal of one of Karachi’s most talked-about neighbourhoods.

The film, which explores the lives, dreams and struggles of Lyari’s youth, drew large crowds to cinemas across the city as moviegoers gathered to watch a story many described as emotionally powerful and socially relevant.

A colourful red-carpet premiere held in Karachi added to the excitement surrounding the release, attracting celebrities, artists, filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts, including lead actor Dananeer Mobeen and executive producer Ayesha Omar.

The star-studded event marked the release of a film that shines a spotlight on the dreams, struggles and resilience of the youth, as the cast and crew celebrated a heartfelt tribute to one of Karachi’s most culturally rich yet misunderstood neighbourhoods.

Speaking to media representatives during the ceremony, Omar said the film was more than just a cinematic project and reflected the real emotions, aspirations and hardships experienced by Lyari’s younger generation.

“‘Mera Lyari’ is not just a film, but a true reflection of the dreams, emotions and struggles of Lyari’s youth,” Omar said. She added that the project intentionally focuses on the positive and vibrant aspects of Lyari that are rarely highlighted publicly.

Omar told The Express Tribune that the film was not made to counter any other project, but rather to present the authentic spirit of Lyari. “This film is not trying to counter any other movie,” she said. “What we have shown is the real Lyari – its people, its dreams, its resilience and its beauty.”

“In many Bollywood films, Lyari has been reduced to fake propaganda created on sets, but we wanted to bring audiences the truth by shooting with the actual people and streets of Lyari,” she said, while highlighting themes of hope, ambition and perseverance through the lives of young people facing numerous challenges.

Artists and guests attending the premiere also described the film as an important reflection of social realities. Several participants said the story goes beyond conventional entertainment by presenting an emotional, inspiring and authentic narrative, resonating with audiences.

“The actors performed brilliantly, and the Balochi spoken in the film was very impressive,” said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Nabil Gabol, who also belongs to Lyari. “Had I known earlier, I would have taught the actors even more Balochi words.”

Actor Yasir Hussain also spoke at the event, saying the portrayal of Lyari often seen in Indian films does not reflect reality. “The real Lyari is completely different from the image shown in many films,” he remarked while speaking to The Express Tribune.

Directed by Abu Aleeha, ‘Mera Lyari’ has already attracted attention for its authentic storytelling and on-location shooting in Lyari, involving local residents and football players as part of the cast. Cinema-goers attending the premiere praised the film for presenting a softer and more hopeful image of the neighbourhood.

The film centres on young people who continue to pursue hope and ambition despite economic and social hardships. Through its storyline, ‘Mera Lyari’ attempts to capture the determination of individuals striving to build better futures while remaining connected to their community and identity.

Viewers attending the screening praised the film’s realistic approach and emotional depth, saying productions of this kind not only provide meaningful entertainment but also encourage wider conversations about overlooked communities and positive social values.

Many audience members also appreciated the film’s focus on resilience and human connection rather than sensationalism, describing it as a refreshing portrayal of Lyari and its people.

The premiere was attended by several prominent figures from Pakistan’s entertainment industry, including Nadia Hussain, Mushk Kaleem, Sahir Lodhi, Nawal Saeed and Wajahat Rauf, along with other actors, models and members of the film fraternity.

With its release now under way, ‘Mera Lyari’ has already generated significant discussion for bringing a more nuanced and compassionate image of the historic Karachi neighbourhood to the big screen while celebrating the perseverance and dreams of its youth.
