A new update has stirred renewed buzz around Universal’s long-planned Miami Vice reboot. The project, quietly in development for several years, appears to be moving forward with key casting discussions underway. While details remain scarce, early reports suggest Michael B. Jordan could headline the film, marking a major step toward reviving the iconic 1980s crime drama for the big screen.

Michael B. Jordan is reportedly in early talks to star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in Miami Vice, the upcoming Universal Pictures reboot directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick).
Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter report that negotiations continue as Universal targets an August 6, 2027, release for the film. If the deal closes, Jordan will play one half of the famous detective duo, while the studio continues to search for an actor to portray James Crockett.
The new feature revisits the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, drawing directly from the pilot and first season of Anthony Yerkovich’s original NBC series. Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy wrote the script based on Yerkovich’s characters. Joseph Kosinski produces the film alongside Dylan Clark, known for The Batman. Universal has yet to confirm any official casting announcements.
The original 1980s TV series featured Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo Tubbs. The show became a cultural touchstone, known for its pastel visuals, soundtrack, and depiction of Miami’s nightlife. Michael Mann directed a 2006 feature version starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, which grossed $163.7 million worldwide.
Deadline’s sources said Jordan’s name circulated for months before Universal extended the official offer after adjusting his schedule. The studio allowed him time to complete post-production on The Thomas Crown Affair, his directorial project for Amazon MGM Studios. Production on Miami Vice will begin in 2026, with filming planned for IMAX.
Kosinski’s version aims to update the franchise for modern audiences while retaining the high-speed visuals and sleek tone that defined the original show. Universal has not issued further statements regarding casting or plot details.
