Michael J. Fox has revealed there was some “tension” between him and his co-star Crispin Glover on the set of Back to the Future.
The 64-year-old actor, who began his career as a child actor in the 1970s, portraying Alex P. Keaton on the NBC sitcom Family Ties and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future film trilogy, made the admission in his new memoir, Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum.
In the book, which was released on Tuesday, Michael also revealed he worked double shifts at the time, filming with Family Ties in the morning and Back to the Future at night.
The actor also revealed details of his interactions with Crispin, who portrayed Marty’s father, George McFly, in the films.
According to Michael, Crispin, 62, had “his own ideas” as to how and where his character should move, which created some “tension” with writer Bob Gale and writer-director Bob Zemeckis.
“My guess is that he saw George as a wanderer, a free spirit who traveled in random patterns — in this case, perpendicular to the camera.”
Michael claimed that after “drifting out of frame,” one crew member “fabricated a miniature corral made of sandbags and C-stands, trapping Crispin into adhering to the parameters of the shot.”
Despite sharing these moments of “tension,” though, Michael said he loved working with Crispin as he praised the actor saying, “His talent was unquestionable, although his methods sometimes created friction. Still, I respected how he remained true to George (as he understood and embodied him).”
He added that he knew Crispin prior to Back to the Future but admitted, “I wouldn’t, however, say I was prepared to act with him – there’s no way to prepare for Crispin.”
Michael’s book came out just days after he confirmed he can no longer walk after “breaking so many bones” amid his Parkinson’s battle.
The iconic Hollywood star has been battling the progressive neurological disease since 1991, when he was just 29 years old.
He publicly shared his diagnossi seven years ago and since then, has regularly provided updates about his health.
In his latest update, he said, “I take it easy now, I don’t walk that much any more. I can walk but it’s not pretty and it’s a bit dangerous.”
