Just days after songwriter Bobby Hart’s death at age 86, Micky Dolenz — the last surviving member of The Monkees — shared a new tribute that struck a chord with fans.
The video features a vintage clip of The Monkees TV show with “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” playing over it. Dolenz paired it with a heartfelt caption remembering Hart’s enduring impact on the band.
“Still thinking about Bobby Hart,” Dolenz wrote. “He and Tommy gave us so many classics, and ‘(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone’ was one of the first that really rocked on stage. Every time I sing it, I’m reminded of Bobby’s gift for melody and energy.”
Dolenz also shared a piece of chart history: though released as the B-side to “I’m a Believer” in November 1966, the song still climbed to No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. “It proved a B-side could be as powerful as a hit,” Dolenz explained.
Fans Flood Comments With Love
Monkees fans were quick to join in the remembrance.
“This song was the song that got me into the Monkees earlier this year. I still love it so much!” one wrote.
Another commented simply, “I love you singing this.”
A third added, “God, I love this song ♥,” and a fourth wrote, “Still one of my favorite TV shows ever, I grew up watching the reruns.”
The new tribute follows Dolenz’s Instagram post last week, when he called Hart “the stillness that is the eye of the hurricane” during The Monkees’ whirlwind years of success.

Bobby Hart’s Lasting Legacy
Alongside songwriting partner Tommy Boyce, Hart penned some of The Monkees’ most beloved tracks, including “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I Wanna Be Free” and the iconic Monkees theme song. The duo also wrote hits for Jay and the Americans and Chubby Checker, and later joined Dolenz and Davy Jones in the touring act Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart.
Dolenz’s latest TikTok shows how deeply Hart’s music remains tied to The Monkees’ live performances — and to Dolenz personally. “Playing that song live still gets me,” he admitted.
