A new 2,000 square metre town square has been confirmed for Mount Barker, bringing a new spot to gather, shop and attend events.
The new town square will be located in the long-vacant site, in Mount Barker’s centre, next to the Mount Barker Central shopping centre, bounded by Hutchinson Street, Morphett Street, Stephen Street, and Druids Avenue.
The confirmation comes after their pop-up park trail run which hosted 24 events: from inflatable discos and aerial acrobatics to fire twirlers, bustling markets, live musicians, AFL teams and even sheep mustering.
“More than 11,000 people came through, drawn by the sheer variety and sense of fun,” said acting mayor Rowan Voogt.
The pop-up park proved the space could be used as a meeting place, which was central and accessible.
“Families lingered, friends reconnected, and visitors discovered a new side to the city centre.”
The permanent town square will have a dedicated stage and grassed performance area, built for everything from live music and cultural events to relaxed Sunday picnics. A boulevard will run through the space, to host market stalls, community celebrations and gatherings.
“An interactive zone positioned next to a hospitality outlet will create a natural hub for families, a place where children can play while adults enjoy a coffee.”
A new laneway will connect Hutchinson and Stephen Streets, providing pedestrian and vehicle access, as well as accessible parking and a drop-off zone. This laneway and parking area will also serve as an extension of the town square for community events and markets.
The landscaping is set to soften the space with native garden beds, hardy decorative plantings and a curated mix of native and exotic trees that echo the character of the surrounding landscape. Lighting will be stretched across the centre with other feature lighting littered throughout the rest of the space.
“It will support new businesses and provide the central gathering space Mount Barker’s growing population has been asking for,” Voogt said.
The dirt will start moving this month, with major construction expected to commence in July and completion for early 2027.
