NBC News’ Vicky Nguyen responds to Today viewer who criticized her “mansplaining” comment toward Carson Daly on Friday’s broadcast.
On Friday, July 17, Nguyen joined Al Roker, Laura Jarrett, Craig Melvin and Daly for Today’s “Best Ways” segment on choosing the best grill for summer barbecues. When her news package concluded, Nguyen, 47, shared a grilling tip from Paul Hope, Consumer Reports editor and professionally trained chef.
Daly, 53, chimed in to say that he and Roker, 71, “have a lot to say about the topic,” and shared two grilling tips of his own. He went on to explain that a meat thermometer needs to be in the center for a correct temperature and that the most expensive grill isn’t always the best.

Roker, then, said those tips were included in Nguyen’s piece, which prompted her to say, “Yeah, thank you for mansplaining that again, Carson.” She laughed and playfully nudged him, as the rest of the hosts erupted in laughter.
“I am just passionate about the grill,” Daly joked, while Roker quipped, “You come for the grill advice and stay for the boom!”

In a July 20 Instagram post, Nguyen shared a screenshot of an email she received from a Today show viewer who claimed she owed Daly an apology for her comment toward him on the July 17 broadcast.
“You owe Mr. Daly an apology for your ‘mansplaining’ comment – it’s actually quite ironic that you’d say that, considering that your pieces are incredibly patronizing – ‘Hey America – you can save money on those high grocery bills by using coupons and shopping at Aldi! You’re welcome!,’” the email read.

“Your work treats viewers as if we’re idiots every time you’re on the screen,” the email continued. “I wish one of your cohosts would say to you ‘Thanks for elite-splaining that to the unwashed masses ahahahahhahahaha’ and give you a phony hug.”
“Get off your high horse, lady. I know this is only being read by an assistant who will never pass it on, but at least I hope it give you a smile if you find your boss as insufferable as the average viewer does,” the email ended.
Under her post, Nguyen simply wrote, “It’s hard out here for a consumer reporter.”
In her comments, Daly joked, “I see you got my letter! 😂 love ya Vicky ❤️.” Nguyen replied, “😭😭😭😭😭🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝 phew I’m glad we’re good 😂😂😂.”
