David Broncano in La revuelta
Netflix has struck a deal with Spanish public broadcaster RTVE to add episodes of daily comedy and interview show La revuelta (The Revolt) to its catalogue, making them available on the platform one day after their free-to-air broadcast.
The move is unprecedented for a daily (Monday to Thursday) entertainment programme in Spain and marks another step in Netflix’s efforts to broaden its reach and relevance through mainstream content and events.
Hosted by David Broncano, La revuelta has been RTVE’s flagship access primetime show since 2024, when it moved over from SVoD platform Movistar Plus, where it previously aired as La resistencia.
In each episode, recorded in front of an audience at Madrid’s Teatro Príncipe Gran Vía, Broncano and his team of collaborators welcome a celebrity guest for an interview delivered in the show’s irreverent comedic style.
The programme has built a huge young fanbase, with much of its impact driven by YouTube, where near-complete episodes are uploaded in segments, as well as social media.
La revuelta is produced by El Terrat (The Mediapro Studio) and Encofrados Encofrasa, the prodco led by Broncano, Jorge Ponce and Ricardo Castella.
RTVE secured the format following a high-profile negotiation, in a deal valued at €28m (US$32.5m) for two seasons.
While RTVE and Netflix had previously experimented with a similar arrangement for daily scripted series Valle salvaje, this will mark the first time the streamer has added a daily current affairs and entertainment programme in Spain.
The news also comes days after Netflix announced it would air a live daily programme for the first time, following a deal with iHeartMedia to bring a video simulcast of popular radio morning show The Breakfast Club to the platform.
For RTVE, the deal further strengthens its strategy of partnering with global streamers. Its biggest agreement to date was announced in March with Disney+, which will add a selection of the public broadcaster’s scripted series and entertainment shows, including hit format MasterChef and upcoming drama Rojo sobre blanco (Red on White), one day after their free-to-air debut.
