Smith Entertainment Group is partnering with Live Nation for a new music venue.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Team owner Ryan Smith as Austin Ainge is introduced as the new president of basketball operations for the Utah Jazz at a news conference in Salt Lake City on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Smith Entertainment Group is partnering with Live Nation to build a new indoor music venue in downtown Salt Lake City, SEG announced Tuesday.

The roughly 6,000-capacity venue aims to host 200 events yearly, including 100 concerts. It will also host a range of corporate, conference and community events.

Live Nation is a leader in live events and ticketing. This project will be the company’s only large indoor venue in the Salt Lake City area. The deal with SEG is the first of many expected moves regarding the plans for the area between the Delta Center and Salt Palace Convention Center.

“We’re proud to partner with Live Nation to bring one of the world’s premier event venues to the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. We have seen the incredible impact hockey has had on downtown, bringing hundreds of thousands of more people to the City and spurring amazing economic growth for downtown businesses,” Ryan Smith, SEG chairman and CEO, said in a news release.

SEG bought a chunk of the Salt Lake Palace Convention Center at the end of April after the Salt Lake County Council voted unanimously to approve the sale. It claimed 12 parcels of land — including the Salt Palace’s largest exhibit hall, a smaller exhibit hall and a connected parking garage — for around $55.4 million.

SEG will have possession of the land by February 2027, and construction on the convention center and downtown sports district is expected to begin sometime in 2027 or 2028, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said.

This new music venue with Live Nation will be in the area between the Delta Center and the Salt Palace Convention Center, which will be “the heart” of the planned downtown sports, entertainment, culture and convention center district, SEG said.

“Our goal has always been to bring enormous opportunities to downtown. Once the transformation of Delta Center was underway, partnering with Live Nation on what a world-class concert venue could look like in downtown became a top priority,” Smith said. “Not only will it bring the best artists in the world to Utah, but it will also bring a million people downtown to experience Salt Lake City every year. Both SEG and Live Nation will be committing considerable financial investment into the development of this venue. This is the first of many announcements as we continue to work at attracting the best and most influential brands in the world to invest in our state.”

Live Nation has recently been expanding its presence in sports and entertainment districts across the country. MGM Music Hall at Boston’s Fenway Park is one of their current venues, and Live Nation has upcoming projects such as Citizens at The Wylie in Pittsburgh, a downtown Indianapolis venue with Boxcar Development and a new venue in downtown Atlanta’s Centennial Yards.

“Utah is a great market for live music, and Smith Entertainment Group is the right partner to help us deliver a world-class venue to fans in Salt Lake City,” Michael Rapino, CEO of Live Nation, said in a news release. “SEG’s incredible vision for the downtown district aligns with our mission to expand access to live music. This venue will be a hub for unforgettable experiences, connecting fans with the artists they love.”

Alongside this project, the Delta Center will remain home to concerts and entertainment events downtown for 12,000 to 19,000 attendees.
