HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The city of Hurricane has a plan to bring live entertainment to Main Street, and it starts with knocking walls down at the old fire department.
“They’re working on building the stage right now,” Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said. “It’s a huge stage, and the whole thing will have a facelift. It won’t look like this in just a month or so from now. It won’t look anything like what you see behind me.”
Business owners said they’re excited to see something new to draw in visitors to Main Street.
“To get good live local music is something that I enjoy, but to actually have it right here across the street in Hurricane — that’s gonna be a huge asset for Main Street,” said Jimmy Belknap, owner of Belknap Dough Company.
Matt Snyder, owner of Bear Wood Company, had similar thoughts.
“We’re just giving people another excuse to come and enjoy Hurricane,” Snyder said. “And if people are coming to enjoy Hurricane, then you know that gives them a chance to, you know, stop in Bear Wood Company and shop around, and you know I hope to benefit from it for sure.”
Mayor Edwards said the possibilities are endless and he hopes the venue will give a growing community a small town feel.
“It’s listening to the bands, but it’s also for fellowship of people here in the Hurricane community and all over, really,” Edwards said.
Hurricane resident David Boyles said, “You could actually have different genres coming in. You could have country night, and you can have whatever night you want. You could have a gospel revival night there if you wanted to.”
Edwards hopes the venue will entertain the community night after night with talent from near and far.
“I’ve already had bands contact me from sometimes a little far away, multiple counties away and they’ve heard about this and they said how do we get on the list to play there?” Edwards said.
The mayor added that the parking lot will eventually expand to fit more cars when the venue finally opens up.
Edwards also said the venue will likely cost the city somewhere between $50,000 to $60,000, with all the labor done by the city. He said the venue should be ready soon, but the city hopes to begin using it by the spring of 2026.
