A new indie movie filming in Central New York is seeking extras for a key scene.
“The Sentinel,” written and directed by filmmaker and actor Joe Cunningham, is a new project centered on a combat veteran struggling to care for his young son while dealing with severe PTSD. At least 50 extras are needed for the film’s final scene, which will be a wake.
The scene will be shot Sunday, Sept. 7, at the American Legion Eastwood Post 1276 at 3701 James Street in Syracuse, N.Y., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Extras will be wake attendees and should dress accordingly, according to a casting call.

Extras will not be paid, but will receive an IMDb credit, light snacks and beverages, and an invite to the premiere in 2026-2027.
The “magic of the movies is the other people,” Cunningham said. “Extras sell the scenes in movies. They are essential.”
Cunningham said “The Sentinel” has already featured 300 people over 88 scenes in 50 locations involving more than two dozen local businesses.
“Community support has been unbelievable,” he said. “I’m excited to give this special opportunity to anyone interested in the magic of being in a movie, especially right here in Central New York.”
A release date for “The Sentinel” has not been announced.
