May has a lot of live music springing forth in Pittsburgh – and we can’t track it all in one hour – please see the Jazz Central Calendar – as June and July also filling with live events to share.
Some highlights upcoming include the return of the Roger Humphries Boat Ride, returning to the Gateway Clipper Fleet on Sunday June 28th. Also in June, a fundraiser event for the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival featuring Sean Jones and a special “Miles at 100” Event – Tuesday June 23rd at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center. Plus, a slate of added summer events at MCG Jazz – from the US Navy Commodores Big Band, June 18th, Flutest Jamie Baum and her Sextet + June 26th and Marion Meadows with Alex Bugnon, July 18th; and Al and Stacey Schulman at Con Alma, June 4th.
May still has more in store – including a return by vocalist / Songwriter Corrine a the City Winery in the Strip, Wednesday May 20th; Jazz Poetry Month this Thursday and next at City of Asylum, Alphabet City; Tamara Tunie at MCG Jazz May 23rd, and this weekend, a Friday album release show with Erik Lawrence, Ross Antonich, Dylan Zeh and Derek Bendel at the Government Center, Northside; and Latino artists Friday in the Lobby of the Public Theater on Penn Ave, featuring Noel Quintana and Hugo Cruz.
Saturday May 16th has Mark Strickland with a 2pm jazz popup at Golden Age Beer – and also a 2pm Mary Lou Williams Birthday Celebration at the LIT Cigar Lounge presented by the Mary Lou Williams Institute.
Another new release event is coming but got delayed – vocalist Esai Aliquo with her grandfather, Don Aliquo, Sr – with a new release called “Inherited Groove.” Don took a tumble a week or two ago and is recovering – well tell when a release event is happening, but we do have a copy of their new recording to share!
